The same hacker that took claim for hacking Rockstar Games that leaked dozens of videos of Grand Theft Auto 6 in development also was responsible for the hack against Uber last week. Uber states in an updated blog post that they are in active communication with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Uber states that it believes the person responsible for the hack against both Uber and Rockstar Games is “affiliated with a hacking group called Lapsus$, which has been increasingly active over the last year or so.”
Lapsus$ has also claimed responsibility for hacking Microsoft, Samsung, and Nvidia in the past.
Rockstar Games stated that they are “extremely disappointed”, but that there is “no long-term effect” on the development of Grand Theft Auto 6. No live services, such as Grand Theft Auto Online, were affected.
The hack of Rockstar Games is the largest hack against a videogame developer in history, dwarfing the hack of Valve Corporation’s Half-Life 2 back in 2004.
The leaked videos have been removed from YouTube, but may still be available elsewhere. The damage of leaking any game this far in advance of release is significant, as it can reveal plot lines, game concepts, and is an unfinished product.
The leaked videos all but confirm there will be a male and female protagonist, and that the setting will be Vice City.
