Episode 3: Why is big tech laying off and freezing hiring?

In Episode 3 of our Cybersecurity Careers Podcast, we dive into the recent market and news headlines rocking “Big Tech”: we’re not hiring. We’re firing. We’re laying off. And it might continue through late 2023, at least for Apple and Google.

It’s probably going to get worse before it gets better.

How could companies with tens of billions in cash on their balance sheet be laying people off?

Why are the layoffs and hiring freezes happening across Silicon Valley?

Just because companies have that cash doesn’t mean that they want to spend it. And depending on how long or how bad this economic recession and uncertainty continue, they might need to increasingly use it.

And some companies, like Meta, are increasingly investing tens of billions ($36 billion so far) in risky bets like the Metaverse hoping to reap large rewards in better economic conditions.
