Google Cloud has announced the general availability of Generative AI (GenAI) support on Vertex AI. This means that businesses, governments, and developers can now use Google’s large generative AI models to quickly build and deploy custom applications. This means that Google’s models like PaLM 2, Imagen, and Codey are now accessible to any developer or business in a new “ML-as-a-Service” type option.

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create new content, such as text, images, and music. It’s based on the idea that computers can learn to generate new data by analyzing large amounts of existing data.

Vertex AI is Google’s machine learning platform for training and deploying ML models and AI applications. With the addition of Generative AI support, Vertex AI now offers a complete solution for building and deploying generative AI applications.

First-party, open source, and third-party models to jumpstart custom app development

To use Generative AI on Vertex AI, developers first need to choose a foundation model from Google or another provider. Foundation models are pre-trained models that can be used as a starting point for building custom generative AI applications. A wide variety of models are available for any developer to utilize on Google Cloud’s Vertex AI Model Garden.

Once a foundation model has been selected, developers can use the platform to tune and deploy the model for their specific application. Vertex AI provides a variety of tools and resources to help developers with this process, including:

  • A simple UI for tuning foundation models
  • A library of pre-trained models for common use cases. Text, Chat, image generation, and pre-trained APIs like speech-to-text or translation
  • A set of APIs for developers who want to customize the model training process

The announcement makes it easier for businesses, governments, and developers to build and deploy custom generative AI applications. This technology has the potential to revolutionize a wide range of industries, including healthcare, finance, and entertainment.

Google is hoping developers and businesses adopt the technologies to rapidly improve manual tasks and drive efficiencies in creative and analytical workloads.
